"Exile Shall Not Silence Us" - A podcast series on African human rights defenders in exile AfricanDefenders launched on World Refugee Day 2020, a podcast series entitled "Exile Shall Not Silence Us." Based on the collected testimonies of over 120 exiled human rights defenders (HRDs), in-depth case studies and featuring interviews with four exiled HRDs, the podcast series highlights the professional, security, socio-economic, and psychosocial challenges of HRDs in exile in Africa, but most of all their achievements and resilience strategies.

More from the Secretariat
  • DefendDefenders and AfricanDefenders co-hosted a webinar series on the impact of COVID-19 on African HRDs. Each webinar had more than 100 participants from across the African continent with French and Arabic translation available;
  • AfricanDefenders joined 23 other non-governmental organisations in signing an open letter to member and observer states to extend the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Eritrea ahead of the 44th Session of the Human Rights Council. We urged State delegations to support the adoption of a resolution extending the Special Rapporteur’s mandate for another year;

  • On Africa Day 2020, we released a statement together with our sub-regional networks to commemorate the 57th anniversary of Africa Day. The statement reflected on the African Union’s theme for the year, "Silencing the Gun”, defeating COVID-19 and protecting HRDs. It was also featured in the online publication The Horn Observer;

  • Together with 25 other civil society organisations and associations, and 20 legal experts we released a statement condemning the interference of the independence of judicial officers in Malawi by the Executive branch of the government. The statement was featured in an online publication called The Mast;

  • AfricanDefenders, in collaboration with other organisations, submitted an urgent appeal to African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights (ACHPR) for the release of a Nigerian artist who had been arrested after he released a song expressing his frustrations with corruption issues;

  • Since May 2020, we received 10 requests of support under the Ubuntu Hub Cities.So far, we have approved 6 applications , 3 are under consideration and 1 was withdrawn;

  • Between May and June, we took part in several webinars to exchange best practices with different stakeholders especially in the context of COVID-19 such as:"Silencing the Guns” virtual conference hosted by African Union in commemoration of Africa Day on 25 May; and"Women HRDs addressing SGBV during COVID-19 in East and Southern Africa” organised by the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights - Regional office for East and Southern Africa; and

  • Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, several human rights experts and civil society organisations have called on governments in Africa to release HRDs as they face an increased risk of contracting the virus in prison. In this context, together with DefendDefenders, we launched the campaign #FreeHRDsNow, which acknowledges efforts by African States to decongest prisons and maps out advocacy efforts by human rights organisations and human rights experts to call for the release of HRDs, journalist, artists and other prisoners of conscience in the context of COVID-19. The campaign also provides tools and resources for grassroot civil society organisations to join in the advocacy efforts to call for the release of HRDs, journalist, artists and other prisoners of conscience.

North Africa:
  • Together with 64 other non-governmental organisations, the Cairo Institute for Human Rights (CIHRS)penned an open letter to the Egyptian Ministry of Justice calling for investigations into the death of Shady Habash, a filmmaker who died in pre-trial custody in May 2020. The letter also calls for the release of artists and writers who are being held in pre-trial detention in relation to their work;

  • On 1 May 2020 CIHRS made a submission on reprisals against individuals cooperating with the human rights mechanisms of United Nations to the office of the Secretary-General. This submission focuses on intimidation and reprisals facing human rights defenders including from Egypt and Libya; and

  • Did you know over 400 editions of CIHRS’ specialised human rights publications are available online

West Africa:
  • The West African Network of Human Rights Defenders (WAHRDN)signed on to a statement calling on the authorities in Togo to protect HRDs. This was after the arrest of three HRDs and a journalist who were planning to observe the intervention of law enforcement at the home of political opponent Agbéyomé Kodjo in Lomé; and

  • WAHRDN also released a statement denouncing the extra-judicial killings of the Fulani people in Burkina Faso

East and Horn of Africa:
  • Defenders Coalition released a statement calling for a criminal investigation into the arrest of Jim Nyamwaka Nyakundi, an artist and activist, who was arrested after releasing a song, I am Offended,that was critical of a governor in Kenya; and

  • At DefendDefenders, June was the month of mental wellbeing for HRDs. DefendDefenders focused on highlighting the organisation’s work regarding well-being, and sharing the knowledge, skills, and experiences of HRDs.
  • The Southern African Human Rights Defenders Network (SAHRDN) released a statement of solidarity for an Eswatini sexual and gender minorities advocacy group, Eswatini Sexual and Gender Minorities (ESGM), over the right to organise after the Eswatini’s Registrar of Companies refused to register it as a legal entity; and

  • Following an increase in cases of journalists being arrested in Zimbabwe, SAHRDN released a statement calling for the immediate and unconditional release of detained journalists in Zimbabwe.

L'exil ne nous taira point» - Une série de podcast sur les défenseurs africains des droits humains en exil
A l'occasion de la Journée mondiale des réfugiés 2020, AfricanDefenders a lancé une série de podcast intitulée «L'exil ne nous taira point», sur la base des témoignages de plus de 120 défenseurs des droits humains (DDH) exilés, et des études de cas approfondies. La série met en exergue les défis professionnels, sécuritaires, socio-économiques et psychosociaux des DDH en exil sur le contienent africain. Et surtout, leurs stratégies de résilience. Cet entretien a eu lieu avec quatre DDH victimes et en exil.

  • DefendDefenders et AfricanDefenders ont co-organisé une série de webinaires sur l'impact du COVID-19 sur les DDH africains. Chaque webinaire a réuni plus de 100 participants de tout le continent africain avec une traduction simultanée en français et en arabe;

  • AfricanDefenders s'est joint à 23 autres organisations non gouvernementales pour signer une lettre ouverte adressée aux États membres et observateurs du Conseil des Droits de l’Homme des Nations Unies, les exhortant de proroger le mandat du Rapporteur Spécial sur l'Érythrée à la 44e Session du Conseil des Droits de l'Homme;

  • À l'occasion de la Journée de l'Union Africaine 2020, nous avons publié une déclaration avec nos réseaux sous-régionaux pour commémorer le 57e anniversaire de la Journée de l'Afrique. La déclaration reflétait le thème de l’Union africainede l’année, «Faire taire les armes en Afrique dès 2020 », la pqndé,ie du COVID-19 et la protection des DDH. Cette déclaration a été reprise sur internet par The Horn Observer;

  • Avec 25 autres organisations et associations de la société civile qfricaine et 20 experts en droit, avons publié une déclaration condamnant l'ingérence du pouvoir exécutif dans les affaires relevant du pouvoir judiciaire; et mettant en mal l'indépendance judiciaire au Malawi p. La déclaration a été prreprise en ligne par The Mast;

  • AfricanDefenders, en collaboration avec d'autres organisations, a soumis un appel urgent à la Commission Africaine des Droits de l'Homme et des peuples (CADHP) demandant la libération d'un artiste nigérian qui avait été arrêté, jugé et condemé en 48 heures de procédures après avoir publié une chanson exprimant ses frustrations face aux problèmes de corruption dqns l’Etat de Kano au Nigeria;

  • Depuis mai 2020, nous avons reçu 10 demandes de soutien dans le cadre de l'initiative Ubuntu Hub Cities. Jusqu'à présent, nous avons approuvé 6 demandes, 3 sont à l'étude et 1 a été retirée;

  • Pendant le mois de mai et juin, nous avons participé à plusieurs webinaires pour échanger les meilleures pratiques avec différentes parties prenantes notamment dans le cadre de droits humains et COVID-19 telles que: Conférence virtuelle «Faire taire les armes» organisée par l'Union africaine en commémoration de la Journée de l'Afrique le 25 mai; et«Women HRDs addressing SGBV during COVID-19 in East and Southern Africa» organisé par le Haut-Commissariat des Nations Unies aux droits de l'homme - Bureau régional pour l'Afrique orientale et australe; et

  • Au cours de la pandémie de COVID-19, plusieurs experts des droit humains et organisations de la société civile ont appelé les gouvernements africains à libérer les DDH parce que courant un risque accru de contracter le virus en prison. Dans cet élan, et en collaboration avec DefendDefenders, nous avons lancé la campagne #FreeHRDsNow, qui admet les efforts déployés par certains États africains à décongestionner les prisons et les efforts de plaidoyer des organisations des droits humains à demander la libération des DDH, des journalistes, des artistes et d'autres prisonniers d'opinion . La campagne fournit également des outils et des ressources per,ettant à toutes les tranches de la societé civile africaine lde se joindre aux efforts de plaidoyer pour appeler à la libération des DDH, des journalistes, des artistes et d'autres prisonniers d'opinion encore en détention.

Afrique du Nord:
  • Avec 64 autres organisations non gouvernementales, leCairo Institue for Human Rights (CIHRS) a rédigé une lettre ouverte au ministère égyptien de la justice appelant à une enquête sur la mort de Shady Habash, un cinéaste décédé en détention provisoire en mai 2020. La lettre demande également la libération des artistes et écrivains qui sont actuellement en détention provisoire en raison de leur travail;

  • Le 1 mai 2020 le CIHRS a présenté une communication sur les représailles contre des individus coopérant avec les mécanismes des droits humains des Nations Unies. Cette communication se concentre sur l'intimidation et les représailles auxquelles sont confrontés les défenseurs des droits humains d'Égypte et de Libye; et
