Puntland President Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas has sacked Galkaayo mayor Mohamud Yussin Yumey and Councillors in the local authority. President Gas appointed Yasin Abdisamid as the acting mayor of Galkayo town but did not mention the replacement of the Councillors. It was not immediately clear how many councilors were removed from their positions.

The Puntland leader did not give reasons behind the move but only noted the decision was based on the need to improve governance in the town.
The changes come barely two months into presidential elections in the eastern state slated for January 2019.
