    Somali Government Progress Activities in the Past Week 10 - 16 June 2017

Mogadishu, 17 June 2017 – H.E. Abdirahman Omar Osman (Eng. Yarisow) briefed the media on the progress activities undertaken by the Federal Government of Somalia in past week 10 - 16 June 2017

HE Minister Yarisow noted the main achievements in this period, which included:

Somali forces killed men who planted landmine

On the 15th of June 2017 the Somali National Army killed members in Al-Shabab militia who have buried landmine which has caused damages in the road that connects Jowhar and Balad districts. Three vehicles carrying troops, which have left Balad and heading to Jowhar met with landmine which was buried on the ground. After the blast the soldiers carried out operation to pursue the perpetrators who buried the landmine and killed them.

Consultative meetings for the review of the constitution was held in Garowe

The Ministry of Constitutional Affairs of the Federal Government of Somalia has been doing Consultative program to review the constitution process and this week it has held consultative meeting in Garowe, the headquarters of Puntland State. The Minister for Constitution Affairs has had meetings with the President of Puntland, the speaker of the parliament, other officials and the sectors of the civil society in Puntland. In a consultative meeting which has taken place at the Center for Research, Peace and Development, the Ministry of Constitution Affairs of the Federal Government of Somalia has held consultative meeting for the different sectors of the civil society in Puntland.

Draft of the Anti-Corruption legislation prepared

The Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia H.E. Mahdi Mohamud Guled (Khadar) has on the 14th of June 2017 received from the Ministry of Justice the draft of the Anti-corruption legislation which is planned to be submitted to the Cabinet so that they debate over the new law in order to approve it. The deputy Prime Minister of Somalia H.E. Mahdi Mohamud Guled has thanked the officials and staff of the Ministry of Justice, since they put a lot of effort and time for the completion of the anti-corruption law which was keenly needed to operate, as well he has pointed out that they translated the former anti-corruption law which was used to be practiced in the year 1968, which was at the time written in Italian language.

National consultative reconciliation conference held in Mogadishu

The deputy Prime Minister FGS who was also the Acting Prime Minister H.E. Mahdi Mohamud Guled has on 13th of June 2017 officially opened the National Consultative Reconciliation Conference, data collection of disputes and resolving. The conference was going on 4 days, and was held in Mogadishu. The meeting was attended by the Minister of Interior, the Federal and reconciliation of Somalia, some officials in the government, ministers from the regional States, traditional elders, poets and sections of the society. The Minister of Interior, Federal and Reconciliation, H.E. Abdi Farah Saeed (Juha) has stated that this conference is only a preliminary meeting for authentic reconciliation for the Somali people. He has pointed out that the need for such consultations meeting and the outcome to be inheritance points for the Somali people, and he has promised that the agreed decisions in the meeting will be implemented.

Conference to unify the process of the country’s tax system held in Mogadishu

The Minister for Finance Dr. Abdirahman Duale Beyle has on the 12th of June opened a conference which his Ministry had invited the Finance Ministries in the regional States, and basically the conference was the unification of the tax and the income and as well the strengthening of the corporation and collaboration. Minister of Finance has told the Ministers and other members who attended the meeting that it is a big responsibility to ensure that the country reaches economically self-reliance. The Minister has urged the participants to collectively work on how to make the country to have credit, and as well the taxpayers to have confidence, and to achieve this there should be accountability. Finally, Minister has said that it is essential to have permanent collaboration between the finance Ministries in the regional States and to put extra effort on this issue.

Al-Shabaab training base in Saakow destroyed

On the 11th of June 2017, the Somali National Army (SNA), in cooperation with international partners, the US have successfully destroyed a stronghold of the terrorist group Al-Shabaab near Saakow district in the middle Jubba region of Jubbaland. The operation was carried out by the specially trained Somalia troops, gaining military support from other international forces. This victory will weaken the ability of the foe to organize new attacks.

The Federal Government has implemented training to Understand Child Rights

Awareness training based on the understanding of Child Rights, preparing of the report of the International Convention of Child Rights was held for some of the senators in the Parliament, officials in the government institutions and civil society organizations on the 11th of June 2017. The seminar was organized by the Ministry of Women and Human Rights of the Federal government of Somalia. During the seminar the focus point was the understanding of Child rights government has focused on understanding during the awareness of children's rights. The purpose of the training was to make the society understand well Child Rights, and such training will be practiced regularly.

Federal Government plans to revive tourism

The Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism H.E. Abdirahman Omar Osman (Eng. Yarisow) has on the 16th of June 2017 had meeting with the Secretary General of the International Tourism Organization (Word Tourism Organization) Mr. Taleb D. Rifai and has said that the Federal Government of Somalia is planning to revive tourism in Somalia, so that foreigners can come for tourism in the country, this will also attract international investors and there will also be job creation for the youth. Since the security is an issue, but we should not wait till everything is in its accurate place, we have to prepare for the new generation to come to a conducive atmosphere in the country, which they can in the future compete with the rest of the world. The meeting with the Secretary General of the WTO is an opportunity for Somalia as a country to play its role in the World Tourism Organization.
