The Ministry of Information and Public Awareness has launched ministerial consultative meeting on Somali Media Strategy and Public Strategic Communication that will be held every two months in one of the capitals of the regional states of the country.

Somali Prime Minister, HE Hassan Ali Khayre attended the end of the three-day conference on 08 May 2017 to witness the signing of a Protocol and MoU among the Ministers of Information of the Federal Government and the regional governments. He praised the ministers and called on all participants and the public to take responsibility.
"Men and Women in front of you and those watching us, I am telling you that just like as the president, the prime minister, ministers and regions have responsibilities, you also have responsibilities for this country. You need to select whether to unite or disunite the country. Choose between telling the facts and truth or politicize everything. Choose between publicizing the good of the public or the bad.” Prime Minister Khayre said
This was a unique conference as the Ministry of Information of the Federal Republic of Somalia managed to bring together all ministers of information from regional states including Puntland, South-West, GalMudug, Jubbaland, HirShabelle and Benadir region, members from the media and representative organization of Somali people and independent journalists. Participants agreed to implement the National Strategy for the Development of Media in Somalia.
In addition to the MoU, a communique has been issued in Somali with the details of the agreed outcome of the three-day conference.
The conference was opened by the Deputy Prime Minister, H.E. Mahdi Mohamed Guled (Khadar) on 6th May 2017, and it was discussed a wide ranging issues including:
• Strengthening the cooperation between Information ministers from the Federal and Regional Government as well as Independent Media.
• Reviewing the National Media Law.
• Reviewing the National Strategy for Somali Media Development.
• Setting the National Strategy for Public Awareness.
• Implementing the National Strategy for Countering Violent Extremism.
The ministers of Information from the Federal and Regional states approved all the above with the Independent media presenting the articles in the Media Law that they would like to be amended and the ministers agreed to put together the emended version of the Media Law within the next two weeks before the Ministry of Information of the Federal Republic of Somalia submits those articles for review to the cabinet and later to the parliament and the president will sign the amended Media Law after the parliament approves it. Participants also agreed to begin the implementation of the Comprehensive National Strategy for Preventing & Countering Violent Extremism (P/CVE) in the country as Ministries of Information (Federal & Regions) will have P/CVE Coordination offices under their ministries in order to better facilitate and coordinate with all key institutions within the Federal Government of Somalia and Regional States in the country.
On 8th of May 2017 following the conclusion of the consultative meeting the MoU and The Final Communique were read at a Press Conference in front of the Prime Minister who admired and commended the team for huge work done in only three days.
