It is really an honor to mark the Somali Flag Day in the place it was first hoisted 61 years ago. Many perished for this flag and many more were born under its freedom. In light of this I humbly extend my sincere joyous congratulations to the Somali people and of course the Armed Forces who have protected the existence of this flag.

I would like to emphasize the essence in the creation of this flag – the five pointed Star in the middle resembles the settlements of the Somali people. The blue color resembles the sky to define the absence of boundary among Somalis. Sixty one years after, today or even tomorrow and in the future what will resemble and define Somali unity will always be that symbolic flag.

It was not only created for the Republic but the Somali ethnic where ever they may reside. In the first thirty years post-independence this symbolic flag guided our tenets, whether we entered into treaties or conflict with nations.

The dignity of this flag will entirely depend on how we as Somalis safeguard and keep our unity. Hence it is essential at this moment that since we are building federalism – this should not create doubt to our unity. The process and the effort have been long. The hope is promising; we have so far achieved considerable progress and have little to complete. We hope to achieve the 2016 Vision in due course; above all we want to come across to the rest of the World that we can be Nation that can rely on itself and charter its destiny. We will develop our economy, utilize our potential natural resources and meet the demands of our public services.       ---END---
