Press Release BELEDWEYNE .SOMALIA, March 9, 2018- The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) and VIKES - Finnish Foundation for Media and Development. with the support of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and FCA conducts a three days training for 30 journalists in Beledwayne town of Hiiran region of HirShabelle State of Somalia on principles of Basic Journalism Skills and Ethics.

The training kicked off on 6 March and ended today 8 March 2018 with the 30 local jounalists from radio, television and online media receiving lessons on how to improve the quality of their news, be objective, balanced and factual.

The initiative is part of a NUSOJ and VIKES led trainings for 90 journalists in the month of March in Beledwayne, Hudur and Dusamareb towns of Somalia aimed at capacitating the media.


The 30 journalists from Beledweyne received certificates after the 3 days of training and thanked NUSOJ for training them and promised to put into practice what they learnt.
A female trainee Hawa Lul Adan of Voice Hiiraan radio, who spoke on behalf of the other trainees and in solidarity with women as part of International Women Days celebrations marked in Somalia. She urged male journalists to encourage and support female colleagues in media.
Hiiraan Regional Administration Secretary Mr. Abdulle Nur, who officially closed the training, thanked NUSOJ for conducting the first media training in Beledweyne and urged similar training to be conducted in order to improve the capacity of local media.
"Today is a very important day for Beledywene and Hiiraan region. For the first time 30 local journalists have received media training here. We are very grateful to NUSOJ for this opportunity because our media really needed such training. I hope those who were trained will put into use the skills they gained,”
NUSOJ Secretary General Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimu, who also spoke during the closing ceremony, said the union has prioritized training of journalists across Somalia because it is a critical component in improving the quality of news and the realization of a professional and responsible media. He thanked VIKES and the Finnish Foreign Affairs Ministry for their support.
"We wish to thank the Hiiraan Administration and in particular the media fraternity in Beledweyne for the support in making this training a success. We urge our colleagues whose training ended today to make use of the opportunity they received to better their journalistic work,” Moalimuu said.
