Somali Family Ministry expresses concern over death of new mother at Hargeisa Hospital
Somalia’s Ministry of Family and Human Rights Development has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a woman who recently gave birth at Hargeisa General Hospital and was found dead inside the facility on Friday.
The woman, identified as Nimco Jama Yusuf, had arrived at the hospital about a week earlier while pregnant and gave birth there, according to the hospital administration.
Somali Minister of Family and Human Rights Development Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi said the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death were deeply troubling and called for greater attention to maternal health and access to adequate medical care.
"We strongly urge all Somalis everywhere not to allow the continuation of such situations in which we are losing a mother, which is very, very far from humanity,” she said.
The minister described the death in Hargeisa as shocking and said it should concern anyone committed to protecting human life.
Somaliland opposition party Kaah also condemned the incident, accusing the hospital administration of negligence and failing to provide adequate services to patients.
The party alleged that treatment costs and shortcomings in health services may have contributed to the woman’s death.
Those allegations have not been independently verified. The hospital administration has previously said that the woman did not raise complaints about medical services, treatment costs or other concerns during her stay.
Security authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
