Ceremony for Somali Female journalists Competition

The Federation of the Somali Journalists (FESOJ) has organized and concluded an award presentation ceremony for Somali Female journalist’s competition for best reporting the history of Makay Garare Eli’s liberation struggle to receive prize.

The ceremony held at the Ministry of Information Compound in Mogadishu with 40 persons in attendance was in remembrance of the Struggle Day (Maalinta Hanoolaato) -January 11, 1948 against the Italian colony, when Hawa Osman , alias Hawa Taako was killed during anti- colonial demonstration

The participants in the ceremony event were included journalists, mainly female journalists from various media stations, Senior journalists, media associations, MPs, officials from Ministry of Information and the Minister of Women Affairs and Human Rights Development,

The intention of the FESOJ organizing this competition event was to renew the history of the men and women that were key part in the strife for the independence of Somalia.

Furthermore, the aim of the competition was to encourage female journalists to review and present the history of the Somali struggle and the role of women, who have sacrificed their lives, for the hhonorable cause for liberation.

The key theme for the competition was to prepare and produce radio package on the history of the struggle for freedom spearheaded by Makay Garare’s who was a female poet from Middle Shabeele Region. The radio reports were evaluated for the wining the award.

The Somalia female journalists’ competition started from December 28, 2022 to January 11, 2023 was open for all the female radio reporters including the female journalists who are FESOJ members. In total nine female journalists have participated in the competition

A committee consisting of writers, literary and journalistic experts has assessed the female journalists’ reports on the bases of creativity, the level of understanding of the topic, the angle of the quotation, the writing style, the voice of the reporter, the tone adopted, the technique, the content, the visualization of the story, the style, the sound effect and the language used.

Khadija Mohamed Diriye , Minister of Women Affairs and Human Rights Development and Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu, Member of Parliament , former senior journalists have presented the Makay Garare Award to Sadia Nour Eid who won the first place of the competition.

Maryan Sheikh Abdi, a female journalist from Jowhar city and Fardowso Sahal, female journalist working in Mogadishu jointly won the second place in the competition.

In conclusion, Farah Omar Nur, the Secretary General of FESOJ in his closing remarks pointed out FESOJ attaches great importance to upgrading the capacity of female journalists; especially in making radio program features and suggested this type of female journalists’ competition to be continued.
