Banadir administration adopts first law targeting capital's cleanliness
Banadir Governor and Mogadishu Mayor Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab signed a new law Wednesday regulating sanitation, waste management and environmental protection in the capital.
The Banadir Regional Administration described the legislation as the first law specifically designed to address cleanliness, waste disposal and environmental protection in Mogadishu.
The signing ceremony was attended by deputy governors, legal and regulatory experts who helped draft the law, judicial officials, prosecutors, government representatives, lawmakers, traditional elders, religious scholars and civil society representatives.
Officials said the law followed legal studies and broad consultations with relevant stakeholders to create an effective framework for addressing sanitation and waste management challenges in the city.
"The law will serve as the basis for efforts to improve the cleanliness of Mogadishu and enhance the overall health and beauty of the city,” Muungaab said.
The mayor said violations of sanitation rules will now carry legal consequences, depending on the severity of the offense.
"Starting today, violating cleanliness will be a violation of a legal rule, and may result in a warning, a fine, the suspension of licenses or even their revocation, depending on the degree of the violation,” he said.
Muungaab called on residents, businesses and institutions to cooperate with authorities in implementing the law and ensuring a cleaner, healthier and more environmentally responsible capital.
