The opposition in Somalia has called on Prime Minister Mohamed Roble to sack intelligence chief Fahad Yasin adding to growing public pressure on the government to come clean over the killing of intelligence agent Ikran Farah.

The Council of Presidential Candidates said in a statement the PM must act swiftly by removing the top leadership of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) to restore confidence in the institution.

CPC also demanded an independent investigation into the disappearance and subsequent killing of Ikran. The 15 member council also called for the appointment of a new NISA director.

Somalis across social media platforms have reacted sharply to the revelation by NISA Thursday evening that Ikran, who worked as head of cyber security at NISA had been killed by Al-Shabaab. The group has however distanced itself from the accusations noting, ‘"We do not know anything about the killing of Ikran Tahlil who works for NISA.”

Social media users have demanded that Yasin whom Ikran’s family has accused of cover-up should be held responsible for the murder of the female agent who was last seen boarding a vehicle outside her home on June 26.

Wadajir party leader and presidential candidate Abdirahman Abdishakur disputed NISA’s assertion that Ikran was killed by the militant group Al-Shabaab. "It doesn’t make sense to just blame al-Shabab considering Ikran Tahlil was missing for more than 2 months. Al-Shabab kills government officials or target them with explosions, but never happened before AS to kidnap intelligence officials from government installations,” Abdishakur tweeted.

Roble sacked two senior NISA officials on July 24 only to be brought back and given new positions within the agency by Yasin.
