Uganda steps up security after Paris attacks

KAMPALA, -- Ugandan security agencies have stepped up security following coordinated terrorist attacks in Paris that have killed at least 127 people and wounded many others on Friday night.

Fred Enanga, Uganda's police spokesperson told Xinhua by telephone that they have carried out additional deployment of police, army and intelligence officers in the capital, Kampala, Entebbe International

Airport, major upcountry towns and border points to counter terror threats.

"We can't take events [terror attacks] that occurred in Paris lightly. We have carried out additional security deployment to ensure our people are safe from terror threats. Early measures have always helped us to thwart the terror acts," said Enanga.

At least 127 people were killed and more than 200 were injured during the shootings and explosions in Paris and its suburbs.

The police spokesperson added that additional security measures have been put in ahead of Pope Francis three day visit to the East African country later this month.

Uganda continues to receive terror threats from the Somali militants Al-Shabaab with known links to Al Qaeda terrorists.

Uganda has over 6,000 troops in Somalia under the African Union Mission in Somalia.

The militants attacked Uganda in July 2010 in twin bomb blasts that left dozens dead.
