Jama was a trustee of the forum until 2011 and also chaired the charity’s management committee.

The forum, which according to theCharity Commission websiteceased to exist on 10 December 2013, received £205,000 in funding between 2004 and 2011.

During this time, Jama made cheque payments and cash withdrawals, and the police later traced the funds back to his personal accounts, aNorthamptonshire Police statementsaid.

The police statement said Jama had "abused his position of trust to court MPs, councillors and other organisations to obtain money under the guise of providing much-needed support to the Somali community".

Jama also pleaded guilty to obtaining a money transfer of £39,000 by deception by making false representations about his employment and income.

Bryan Pye, a member of the Northamptonshire Police fraud investigation team that investigated Jama, said: "This investigation began when a number of individuals expressed concerns about Mr Jama’s activities. Thanks to the support of the Somali community, we were able to successfully investigate Mr Jama’s illegal activities and have been able to achieve a successful result at court.

"Our officers will continue to work tirelessly to investigate such crimes and in this case we will strive to recover money and assets from Mr Jama through the Proceeds of Crime Act."
