National Army commander Ahmed Maslah Hussein in charge of the 14th
Battalion told journalists an operation in Awdhegle town unearthed
several landmines suspected to have been set to target government
soldiers and locals.
"Our engineering teams have unearthed
and safely neutralized several explosive improvised devices (IEDs) and
bombs in different parts of the town,” General Hussein said.
He said operations to rid the area of the mines will continue as ground forces also battle the militant group Al-Shabaab.
Al-Shabaab has been known to plant IEDs targeting military convoys especially in the Lower Shabelle region destroying vehicles and killing soldiers.
