Mogadishu Mayor Omar Filish today laid the foundation stone for the construction of the livestock market in the outskirts of Mogadishu. The mayor who also doubles up as the governor of Banaadir Region launched the construction of the market to enable proper management of livestock trade.

Dayah market which has been in use since 2003 is located in Hiliwa district in the outskirts of the city.

 

The city boss also warned livestock owners and traders from engaging in any trade outside the
designated market to ensure order and enhanced sanitation.

Livestock owners and traders converge in Dayah market to buy and sell livestock every week.

Somalia exports the highest number of live animals in the world with statistics in 2015 pointing to 4.7


million live animals exported to markets mainly in the Gulf region.

However restrictions imposed by countries such as Saudi Arabia have inhibited livestock trade in the recent years.

Livestock have now put in place health measures to health the quality of animals exported to foreign
markets meet international standards.
