REPORT LAUNCH:Turning the Page: Rebuilding Civil Society in Ethiopia 7 May 2019 Dear friends and partners, Today, DefendDefenders launched the reportTurning the Page: Rebuilding Civil Society in Ethiopia,
which examines the challenges faced by Ethiopian human rights defenders (HRDs) amid the ongoing reform process, and makes concrete recommendations for rebuilding a robust and inclusive civil society.
Ethiopia finds itself at a critical crossroad. April 2019 marked the first year of the Abiy government, which initiated a series of progressive reforms aimed at opening political and civic space. On the other hand, Ethiopia is faced with an enhanced level of ethnic tension, and security breakdown. These concerns are further exacerbated by weak legal and political institutions.
