A double shooting Sunday evening left a father of two dead and a woman injured in the city's south end, police said.
Dozens of police vehicles descended on the townhouse on Patola Private after police reported an "active shooting" around 7:30 p.m. Sunday. There was no immediate word on the search for a suspect. Police snipers were lying flat on the street, shielded by parked cars with rifles seemingly trained on a target. Police expanded the crime scene to include the entire length of Cahill Drive east of Albion Road around 9 p.m

Abdifatah Osman was shot in the head and was dead when police arrived.

Mohamud Barre, who said he grew up with the victim in east Ottawa, has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the funeral costs of the slain father of two, who he saidwas known by the nickname "Upti.”

Neighbours on Patola Private, whogathered at the scene near the intersection of Albion Road and Cahill Drive, described loud and commonplace arguments kicking off between the group of men and women involved in the shooting.

An eyewitness to the shooting said things began to escalate Sunday night when a verbal argument between two women became physical. A man, believed to be the shooter, intervened and then shot one of the women in the abdomen, said the witness.

The injured woman ran into the backyard of the home, and Osman ran after her. It was then that the shooter followed them both into the backyard and fired a round of bullets, hitting Osman in the head. He was dead by the time police arrived on scene.

One man who said he was a friend of the victim saidOsman was outside cooking on a barbecue when the suspect approached. The witness said he heard an argument escalating, then heard "multiple shots.”

The witness declined to give his name.

Police initially said the shooter remained at large but his whereabouts could not be verified.

Another woman at the scene said she was communicating with the family of the female victim, and said the woman was undergoing surgery to remove her spleen. She was reportedly shot in the abdomen.
Paramedics took her to the Civic campus of The Ottawa Hospital.

Others at the scene expressed concern for children who were inside a neighbouring unit when the shots were fired.

A large police presence remained in the area.

OC Transpo sent two buses for residents who were told they could not immediately return to their homes.
The shooting was the third of the weekend and the 14th homicide of the year.
