DHUSAMAREEB-Somalia - The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) and VIKES with the support of the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and FCA kick off a two days training for 30 journalists from Dhusamareeb and Guriel towns of Galmudug State of Somalia on principles of basic journalism and ethics.

Objective of the training is to improve the capacity of journalists and their ethical standards to ultimately improve the quality of their news to be able to report objectively and factually.

The initiative is the last of a NUSOJ and VIKES led trainings for 90 journalists in the month of March in Beledwayne, Hudur and Dusamareb towns of Somalia to improve ethical standards and professionalism amongst the media.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the training in Dhusamareeb town, Galmudug’s Head Cabinet Sheikh Mohamed Shaakir thanked NUSOJ and VIKES for the training support extended to the journalists and urged the media to use their esteemed status within the society to promote peace and development.
"I am grateful and welcome NUSOJ to Dhusamareeb and praise them for coming to train the media in Galmudug States. Journalists play an important role within the community and have a good opportunity to either build or destroy .Your word reaches far and wide and many people listen to you and sometimes your messages are even more powerful than those spoken by religious clerics. I wish to urge you to be responsible media and unite people instead of being the cause of division,”
NUSOJ Secretary General Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu thanked Galmudug State for the warm welcome and said that the union of Somalia journalists and VIKES has partnered to help improve media standards in Somalia.
"We are very happy for His Excellency Sheikh Mohamed Shakir, Galmudug Prime Minister to officially open this important training in Dhusamareeb today. This training is part of other trainings in March implemented jointly by NUSOJ and VIKES to train 90 journalists and funded by the Finish government. Soon we will start other specialized training in April and all these trainings are intended to generally help improve the quality of news and instil professionalism amongst the media,”
